Ironic Picture Reveals Poverty Taking Over Greece

A shocking and revealing picture was taken just yesterday in the city of Thessaloniki by AP photo reporter Nikolas Giakoumidis.

The picture exposes, in a most ironic way, the toll  poverty and misery have taken on Greece. A man is rummaging for food in the garbage outside a supermarket. While collecting the best and freshest tomatoes, a white van passes right behind him reading in red “To psomi psomaki,” most probably advertising a bakery.
This might mean absolutely nothing to someone who does not understand Greek. The saying “To psomi psomaki” (psomi means bread, psomaki is the diminutive of the noun and/or refers to the small bread) is always used to describe in a more metaphorical way somebody who is famishing or any situation where people are struggling to make ends meet.
The photographer posted the picture on his personal Facebook account, along with a short description of its whereabouts. In 2012, only weeks away from the 17th general elections, people in Greece are searching for food in the garbage and can hardly make ends meet, while parties are fighting for power and recession is hampering wages and pensions.
