Archbishopric of Cyprus Criticizes the Biblical Archaeology Society for Arriving at the Occupied Area

The Holy Archbishopric of Cyprus has publicly criticized with harsh statements the unacceptable decision of the US-based Biblical Archaeology Society to arrive in the Republic of Cyprus through the illegal Ercan airport in Tymbou, in Cyprus’ Turkish occupied areas.
“This heinous and despicable act has caused outrage and indignation, it challenges in the most brutal way the national and patriotic feelings of the Greek Cypriots,” says among others a press release, issued today by the Archbishopric.
This deliberate act, despite repeated appeals by the Republic of Cyprus, the only recognized state on the island and EU member, and scientific and cultural associations in Cyprus, the US and elsewhere, violates international legality and flouts the elected government of the Republic of Cyprus, the announcement points out.
Additionally, the Holy Archbishopric stresses that the act of the Biblical Archaeology Society in essence disregards the indisputable criminal act of the 1974 Turkish invasion and the ongoing occupation of the 37% of Cyprus territory, the existence of refugees and missing persons and coincides with the disrespectful desecration of the cultural and Christian heritage of Cyprus.
The Society’s two-week trip to Turkey and Cyprus traces the footsteps of the Apostle Paul on his 1st century A.D. mission to spread Christianity in the region. The Cypriot Foreign Ministry appealed to the group to amend its itinerary.
