Writer Georges Sarri Passed Away

On June 9, early in the morning, beloved children’s writer and actress, Georges Sarri, passed away at the age of 87.
Born in 1925 in Athens to a French mother and father of Minor Asia (he lived in Ayvalik), Georges Sarri was an artistic figure with deeply entrenched political opinions on life. She participated in the resistance forces during the WW II, but was forced to leave for Paris in 1947 as a refugee.
During the occupation of Greece, the famous writer was studying at the Dramatic School of Rontiris in Athens. While in Paris, she continued the classes at another drama school. In the French capital, she met the Greek-Egyptian surgeon Markellos Caracostas, they were married and had two children.
In 1962, she returns to Greece and works in the theatre until the military junta prohibit performances. This is also the period when she begins writing her first novel, “The Treasure of Vayia,” which was rather successful and later was made into television. She continued writing several books, especially for kids and young people, but also theatrical plays.
Georges Sarri received many prizes for her literature which tried to include aspects of political, social and historical life of Greece. Her books included also many autobiographical details.
