BBC Reports from Arta in Epirus about Greek Families Leaving the Capital

BBC’s Mark Lowen roams throughout Greece sending reports from the ground to describe the actual situation of the country affected by crisis.  His latest report titled “Greece sees exodus from city to country life'” is from Pahikalamos village in Arta in the Epirus region where he interviewed a modern Greek family and discussed the problems connected to the austerity measures.
The Karinos family used to live in Athens. But when taxes  increased and the family had difficulty in finding new jobs, they came face-to-face with the difficult truth. Eleni Karinos, mother of two children, confesses she could not sleep at nights due to the family’s mounting debts.
All these problems forced the family to make decision to move back to their roots. Their small village offers them at least the possibility of survival, something become less likely in the city.  In Athens, they say, you do not have this choice. Of course, their life is not easy. They wake up early in the morning and work hard to earn their living but they keep trying.
Thomas Karinos’ 73-year-old mother, Paraskevi Karinos, who has lived in the village all these years and has witnessed the return of  her family, holds “mixed feelings.” “If they had good jobs, I would like to see them stay in Athens. But we were very poor and hoped my children would have a better life and then the government destroyed this,” says Mrs. Karinos.
Mark Lowen concludes that for the last several decades “people from the rural areas have been moving  to Athens to find a better life but now the process is being reversed,” and added,  “the lives of the Greeks have changed forever.”
