After Vassilios Rapanos resigned from Finance Minister, the Greek government appointed Yannis Stournaras as new minister. International media rushed to publish a short biography of this new political figure while they remarked that this choice for the crucial finance ministry was a good one.
With a stream of constant reports, the international press is paying tribute to Mr Stournaras saying the markets trust him. The New York Times describe him as “an active man with a fame of rock star in the economic circles of the country” and the editor adds that he is one of the few Greek economists who work independently of Greek partisan interests.
The paper hosts also statements of professor of economics at the Athens University Vassilis Dalamangas who says that “Stournaras is a person able to negotiate on crucial financial affairs with troika.”
Political analyst Yiannis Loulis adds that “Mr Stournaras is a serious and respectable person. Unfortunately, he is member of a bad government, which includes many politicians of the old school, familiar with the policy of irrational spending” and concludes that “he will not survive unless the Greek PM supports him.”
According to The Wall Street Journal, the new Greek finance minister is “a veteran technocrat that has served in previous government posts, known for his no-nonsense views and has been a frequent proponent of neo-liberal policies to shake up Greece’s over-regulated and hidebound economy.”
Deutsche Welle describes the incoming minister as “a liberal economist standing for reforms that will make the Greek economy escape from its difficult situation and will boost its competitiveness.” For the German paper, this is “a diplomatic choice concerning Greece’s impending negotiations with foreign creditors.”
