Two People Infected By the West Nile Virus Transmitted Via Mosquitos

West Nile virus is a disease spread by mosquitos. It affects mostly people who have a weakened immune system (such as HIV carriers or people fighting against cancer and other diseases), young children or the elderly as well as pregnant women.
Greece has for long forgotten what this virus is, but apparently, West Nile virus has returned. In the past few days, two elderly people were taken to hospital in stable but severe condition in the greater Attica region. According to the doctors, their symptoms show onset of malaria caused by infected mosquitoes.
Some of malaria symptoms are abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, nausea and others. It cannot be spread through casual social contact such as a kissing or hand shaking but only through blood transfusions, organ transplants and of course, mosquito bites.
Greek authorities and specialized doctors warn that there is no reason for us to be terrified, however.
Malaria was eliminated from Greece in 1974. Since then, 30-50 people are infected by this virus in Greece per year, but all of them have traveled to countries still plagued by malaria before returning to Greece. In 2011, there have been 40 confirmed cases of the West Nile virus all over the country.
