German 'Der Spiegel' Attacks Corrupt Greek Army

Noting that Greece has not escaped Euro exit fears, the German magazine Der Spiegel this time attacks Greek politicians for not properly handling the problems with regards to Greek military staff. While imposing devastating cuts on salaries and pensions of other state employees, the Greek state won’t “dare” to curtail military expenditures.
Written by a Greek journalist named Georgios Christidis, the article outlines that there still are huge potentials for cuts on the Greek army but “Greek politicians won’t dare to touch the actual problem: that there are too  many military officers in too many military camps.”
The “black hole” in the country’s special forces remains intact, according to the German magazine.
“Whenever the hundreds of jeeps and military vehicles need maintenance works, they must be transported 570 kilometers away, in the city of Ioannina, where the biggest military repair facilities are situated,” reports Spiegel, noting that each time a Greek military officer is assigned with the duty to transfer a damaged vehicle he gets paid extra while much more fuel gets wasted.
“Why do they need all that? Probably because the local politicians wanted to have a base in Ioannina, in order to transfer there military officers who happen to have a visma (a connector, a politician or another important person with influence),” quoting a former high commissioner of the Greek army.
