DNA Evidence Leads to Arrest of Paros Hold-Up Suspect

Police said DNA evidence on a hat and scarf found at the scene of a bank robbery on the island of Paros, in which a taxi driver who tried to stop the suspects was killed, has led to the arrest of a 29-year-0ld man, whom they did not identify. Witnesses told police that four men had raided the bank in the village of Naoussa.
A mobile phone, a hat and a scarf had been recovered from the scene by police officers, who said they believed that one of the robbers lost the items during his scuffle with the taxi driver. Police had also been examining CCTV footage and the burned out getaway car for clues. Despite the DNA evidence, the suspect has reportedly denied any involvement.
The newspaper Kathimerini reported that police sources said the man is also allegedly tied to the Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire, a group that has carried out a series of bombings in 2008 and 2009. The taxi driver, Dimitris Michas was standing near the bank when three of the perpetrators exited the bank with some 60,000 euros.
According to witness reports, he tried to halt the robbers before one of them shot him three times. The three robbers got into a car driven by a fourth man. Another suspects was traced to Athens and arrested and reportedly was well known to authorities who said had been arrested in Agrinio in 2010 by the Greek Anti-terrorist squad.
