Prespa Lakes Finalists for International Environmental Prize

Prespa Lakes in northern Greece are among the four finalists of the prestigious 2012 Thiess International Riverprize. Officials of the international organization acknowledged the environmental significance of a new sustainable program undertaken by the Prespa local authorities for lake water management and preservation of several endangered species of birds, including that of the Dalmatian Pelican.
Apart from the Prespa Lakes, the Willamette River in the USA, the Okavango River between Angola, Namibia and Botswana, and the Nushagak River in the USA are the other three Riverprize finalists. One of the four will be named 2012 Winner at the Riverprize Gala Dinner which will be held on Monday 8 October at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Center in Victoria, Australia.
The Thiess International Riverprize was first awarded in 1999, and has grown to become the world’s most prestigious environmental award. There are now 12 international winners and more than 30 finalists who have demonstrated their outstanding achievement and commitment  to restoring the world’s rivers and lakes. In 2011 the Thiess International Riverprize was awarded to the Charles River in Boston, USA and the Sunshine Coast Rivers Initiative (QLD, Australia).
