Drinking coffee in Greece is more than a habit; it is a daily ritual to enjoy alone on the balcony or with company in a busy café; while reading the newspaper or taking a break from work, both early in the morning and late in the afternoon. The Greeks, as other people around the world, have well adapted to the different coffee products and over the years have developed unique consumption habits and their special characteristics. That’s exactly why the coffee industry produces dozens of different types of coffee, while coffee shops remain popular across the country.
According to the findings of a recent survey, 1000 traditional coffee shops remain open throughout Greece, while the company Coffee Connection owns four percent of the Greek market share. Best known under the name Coffeeway, Coffee Connection also runs the biggest retail coffee shop chain in Greece. Leading multinational companies Nestle (Loumidis Coffee) and Sara Lee (Bravo Coffee) account for 80 percent of the Greek super market shelves, offering a wide range of packed coffee products.
Some 25 tons of coffee is being annually consumed in Greece, with adults and minors enjoying the various flavors. Some 10 percent of the survey sample prefers espresso; 15 percent go for filter coffee; 25 percent, instant and 50 percent Greek coffee. With an estimated worth of 300 million euros ($375.5 million,) the Greek coffee market has not suffered severe losses yet despite the economic crisis, mainly because of the Greeks staying true to their “addiction”.
