Samaras: Greece Must Regain Credibility to Stay in Euro Area

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said his two-year 11.5 billion euros of spending cuts contained unfair and painful decisions that were necessary to restore the country’s credibility and keep the country in the euro area.
“The truth is Greece came very close to exiting the euro,” Samaras said in a speech in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, today. “This would have led the country to destruction. Greece would die. We had to avert this immediate threat. This was our top commitment and that’s what we did. To regain credibility as a country we had to move ahead with and honor our commitments.”
Samaras said decisions by the European Central Bank President Mario Draghi on Sept. 6 showed that it was clear that it is better for Greece to remain in the euro.
