Afghan Student Aces Greek University Entry Test

When he came to Greece five years ago from Afghanistan, Vahit Fassil said, “I didn’t even know how to say “kalimera,” good morning. Now he’s heading for the University of Macedonia to study marketing and operations after scoring high marks on his Pan-Hellenic entrance examinations.
Fassil said he had wanted to study abroad and chose Greece and was settled in Thessaloniki where he attended Greek afternoon school to immerse himself in language studies so that he could fit in as fast as possible. “I met many friends who also helped me learn,” he said. Now, his teachers say, Greek is like a second mother tongue to him as he has become fluent in speaking and writing – as his exam scores showed. But he learned more than the language.
Fassil did not forget to acknowledge the person who offered him a job and even paid for some of his private classes. “He is such a notable person because he has not told anyone about his beneficiary actions,” added Fassil. He said that when he graduates he wants to return to Afghanistan and share what he has learned. “No matter how utopian it might sound, I would like to contribute with my knowledge in Afghanistan, so that we come closer to the end of hatred and wars,” he said.
