Witness Tells Last Moves of Missing US Priest; FBI On Case

father Christiaan Kappes missing

A friend and colleague of Rev. Christiaan Kappes, the Indianapolis priest gone missing in Greece last week, has described his last known moves to an FBI agent investigating the case.
The agent interviewed the priest’s sister, Nadia Kappes Charcap, about the disappearance of her brother. The priest disappeared in Greece on Oct. 1 and his family said they believe he’s in  danger or perhaps dead.
Before he went missing, Father Kappes called his parents in Indiana to tell them that he was trying to escape the country with his translator and close friend, Ioanna Lekakou, because she was involved in a heated dispute over her family’s inheritance.
Nadia Kappes, in am e-mail to the Greek Reporter, gave a description of what her brother was wearing when he was last seen and his last moves as Fr. Fojas, a Catholic priest in Greece, described to her.

“I called Fr. Fojas, one of the last people who had seen my brother. Here is what he said.”
Monday morning 6:30 am: Chris woke him up, explained that Ioanna’s family was trying to kill her.
Chris is “frantic” says “her family wants her dead”
Chris says they want to frame him/ make him look responsible/ make him a prisoner for life
Speaking in Greek, he can’t express everything as clearly so he is told to talk to another father in Italian which he speaks fluently
Fr. Fojas saw that she had taken “several blows” to the arms and had visible signs of injury
Ioanna had medicine, antibiotic/anti-inflammatory for her blows to the arm
(The attack happened between Sunday night – Monday morning
9:00 am Chris leaves for the Police Station
by 2 p.m. they come back to St. Dionsys
Ioanna has one bag, Chris has two bags and he is wearing a Notre Dame baseball cap and civilian clothes.
At a quarter til 3, they make their Catholic confessions (what is done when someone fears for their safety to cleanse the soul) to the priest in the car on their way to the airport.
The plan was to fly out to the United States
Fr. Fojas does not see them again.

Kappes-Charcap also said that the investigation is moving faster now. Light in the Tunnel, the award-winning investigative show by Greek journalist Aggeliki Nikolouli has started to investigate as well. Nikolouli has solved thousands of real-life mysteries and holds the Guinness world record for finding the most missing persons.
“It looks like things have started moving,” said Father Kappes’ sister.
“We got contacted (by the FBI) for the first time, so this is good, also the American embassy in Athens is helping a lot”
Kappes-Charcap is also asking people in Greece who may know the whereabouts of her brother to help the investigation. Information can also be reported to Greek Reporter (contact us here), or you can also communicate with the family through this facebook page.
“I want the Greek people to know that we are very grateful for anything they can do to help Christiaan. My brother loves Greece, I would like to express my family’s eternal love for the country and its people.” She also said that she has never spoken to the family of Lekakou, the translator and friend of her brother who is also missing. “I would love to be able to talk her family and be able to ask them questions,” she said, adding that does not have a way to contact them.
