UNICEF: Over 439,000 Children in Poverty in Greece

More than 439,000 underage children are living below poverty level in Greece due to the ongoing crisis, according to a UNICEF report released on Oct. 16 on the occasion of the World Feed Day 2012 and the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
According to the report, 37,1 percent and  18,4 percent of all poor children in Greece live in families that have shortage in meeting their daily needs including heating.
In most European countries child poverty percentages have increased. In particular, France and Germany have recorded the biggest increase in numbers of children suffering from poverty. Single parent families are worst affected by the crisis. Child poverty in Greece has reached 23 percent, while the respective percentage for Europe is 20.5 percent.
