Prisoners Held in Greek Police Stations

Facing overcrowding in prisons, Greece is keeping many of those convicted of crimes in police station holding cells or detention centers. The newspaper Kathimerini said that many are being held for up to four months until spots open for them in the jails.
Some prisoners may even serve their full sentence in the police stations, it was reported, if the overcrowding continues. According to the Hellenic Police headquarters, there are an estimate 700 people being kept in the police cells instead of being transferred to prisons, with no indication when the situation would change.
