Draft Decree Against Racist Violence Unveiled

Greek Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias

A draft Presidential Decree on dealing with racist violence, which foresees the set-up of a specialized unit in the Greek Police (ELAS), was unveiled during a press conference on Monday by Public Order and Citizens’ Protection Minister Nikos Dendias.
The draft decree, as Athens News reports, envisions the creation of special police divisions initially in Athens and Thessaloniki, and gradually throughout the country, and a telephone hotline for reporting such incidents, Dendias said, noting that the country “does not lack a legal arsenal to deal with racist violence”.
He also announced his intention to file a lawsuit against the British newspaper The Guardian over an article alleging torture of detainees and the General Police Headquarters (GADA) in Athens, adding that the matter was being examined by the Legal Council of the State.
