Theatre of Cologne to Perform Eumenides

The German Greek Theatre of Cologne is going to perform Aeschylus’ tragedy Eumenides Nov. 10, in Aulea Theatre, Thessaloniki.
The Deutsch-Griechisches Theatre, (GGT) in Cologne was founded in 1990 by  the Greek  director and theatrical writer Kostas Papakostopoulos. After studying Economics at the Economic  University  of Athens, Papakostopoulos moved to Germany  and studied Theatrical Studies at the University  of Cologne.
He soon became very  famous in Germany for his pioneering work of ancient drama performances, his multiple approach to drama and promotion of the Greek  Theatre in Germany. As  a former co-worker of Dimiter Gotscheff in the Schauspielhaus Köln and of Frank Castorf at the Volksbühne Berlin, the director and founder of the theater has managed not only to create a German Greek theatrical cooperation but also to develop it further into a multinational cultural initiative. The main aim of the theater is  to create a bridge between Germany and Greece and also between ancient and modern European theater.
The gist of Eumenides is encapsulated in the director’s questioning: “Although human beings live today without guilt and in a rational way, they are trapped by individualism, developing into a threat to European Democracy.”
The theatrical group consists of eight actors. The main characters are performed by Stefan Kleinert, Thomas Franke and Lisa Kusz. The Great Theatre benefactors are the Ministry of Culture of the state Rinania-Vestfalia as well as the city of Cologne.
During the 19 years since it was established, the German-Greek Theatre has presented 22 plays. The performances include six famous works: Plutos, and The Frogs, by Aristophanes; Euripides’ Medea; Aeschylus’ The Persians, and Sophocles’ King Oedipus.
Also, Kechaidis’ To Tavli, The Comedy of the Flies by Zioghas, and others written by  European authors  such as Shakespeare’s Timon from Athens and Heracles, by Heiner Müller.
