Thessaloniki, Gavras Open 53rd Film Festival

Despite Greece’s crushing economic crisis, the 53rd International Film Festival of Thessaloniki opened on Nov. 2 with a welcome from the director, Dimitris Eipidis and Mayor Yiannis Boutaris.
With renewed vision and a strong dedication to independent cinema, the festival once more invited both film makers and the audience to a special celebration of film. At the opening ceremony, the music band, Milky Lady & the Cookies, performed in swing rhythms accompanied by the dance group, Jitterbugs.
The great Greek filmmaker, Costas Gavras, who lives in France, attended the opening ceremony, where the first film to be presented was Holy Motors by the French director Leos Carax. The event is hosted in four auditoriums at the city port as well as the Olympion Cinema, where there will be the premier of  Gavras’ last movie, The Capital.
Films from all over the world, cinematic surprises, distinguished guests, tributes, Master Classes, round table discussions and parallel events will comprise the ten day event, transforming the city of Thessaloniki into a place of discovery and productive dialogue for the Seventh Art.
