Budget Cuts Killing Greek Sports

According to Greece’s beleaguered Olympic Committee (HOC) statement on Nov. 8, budget cuts could lead to the disintegration of Greek sports. The HOC issued a plea to the state to reconsider drastic spending cuts for sports and warned that athletics federations across Greece would shut down in January if their cries fell on deaf ears.
Deep funding cuts in the 2013 state budget will hamstring sports federations no less than a decade after hosting the 2004 Games.
According to HOC General Secretary Manolis Katsiadakis’ statement in a news conference, “We are heading categorically towards the situation whereby Greek athletics will be non-existent from January 1, 2013 and this is something I say in all seriousness.”
Among other statements, HOC Vice President Sakis Vassiliadis stressed that “”Greek sport will simply disappear unless the plans are revised. We had been prepared for a gradual adjustment, but now we have to cope in two months. I don’t think any (of the federations) will be able to handle it and this will be the final blow. There are real concerns that we could see an embarrassingly low number of athletes competing in the next Olympics in 2016.”
Greek sports have been hit with a series of funding cuts as a result of the economic crisis and subsequent austerity measures.
