Cancer Fighter Helen Sotiriou Passes Away

A pioneer in the anti-cancer battle in Cyprus, oncologist Helen Sotririou, has passed away at 92 years old. Born in 1920 in England, she was also a specialist in radiotherapy. She worked in many hospitals and was an active member in the fund-raising to buy the first radiotherapy machine in Britain. She worked at Nicosia General Hospital as a special oncologist and was president of the Department of Radiation Oncology.
She established the first radiotherapy Treatment Center in Cyprus, where she served until 1995 and offered her services to Cyprus’ Anti-cancer Society. She, also, led the movement Women Return and participated in many anti-occupation demonstrations when the island was trying to win its independence from England.
