Workers at IKEA Greece Walk Out Over Pay Cuts and Individual Contracts

IKEA Greece has unilaterally decided to cut wages by up to 15% and demanded employees to sign individual employment contracts to replace their collective agreement
IKEA Greece on 20 November announced that it would unilaterally cut salaries by up to 15% and asked employees to sign individual new work contracts.
Workers at the Athens Central Store, the biggest in Greece both in size and turnover, in a spontaneous reaction refused to sign the new contracts and have shut down the store! The situation is very tense. Police, TV crews & journalists are outside the store.
The Union has declared a work stoppage for today, 22 November, from 17:00 until 21:00 at all IKEA stores in Greece.
The Union of Commerce Employees in Athens has declared a 48 hour solidarity strike for the coming days as an act of solidarity with their colleagues.
UNI has written to IKEA global management asking them to ensure that workers at IKEA are being treated with the respect they deserve and for the company to refrain from making totally unjustified demands regarding wage cuts.
The unilateral declaration of these cuts and the withdrawal from the existing collective agreement are a serious breech of internationally recognized labour standards. They furthermore violate IKEA’s own values and principles which encourage social dialogue and cooperation with worker representatives.
