Thessaloniki Buses Stop Service Due to Debts

The Greek public transport company KTEL suspended almost all its services on Nov. 26 from Thessaloniki because of financial problems. Only the Athens-Thessaloniki line will run, along with trips to take pupils to local schools, as Kathimerini online reports.
The Managing Director of KTEL Thessaloniki, Dimitris Margaritopoulos, said that the company barely had enough money to buy fuel for the vehicles in circulation.
“We are exasperated,” he said. “We have reached our limits and cannot go on. We cover 5,000 kilometers a day and use 3,000 liters of diesel fuel,” he said, adding that the local authorities and other organizations owe the company money. Last week, KTEL Thessaloniki reduced from 28 to 10 the number of routes it was servicing.
Greece’s crushing economic crisis has left the government unable to pay $10.36 billion to creditors and it has slowed, or even stopped, funding for many services, forcing cutbacks or the cessation of some operations.
