Greek Publisher Anastasiadis Charged With Tax Evasion

A well-known Greek publisher who appears on television regularly has been charged with money laundering and tax evasion for having 5.5 million euros ($7.2 million) in the French bank BNP Paribas that a prosecutor said can’t be justified given his income.
SKAI TV reported that Themos Anastasiadis will face felony charges filed by financial affairs prosecutor Spyros Mouzakitis, who at the beginning of the year took over the investigation into Anastasiadis’ finances. The probe began in 2007 when he was implicated in the alleged blackmailing of ex-Culture Ministry general secretary Christos Zachopoulos, who tried to commit suicide.
The publisher has insisted that the money was related to his business interests and not a product of any wrongdoing. Earlier this year, Zachopoulos, who attempted suicide in 2007 after a ministry employee allegedly tried to blackmail him over their affair, told a court on that he had been embroiled in a foreign-backed plot aimed at bringing down the then conservative government of Costas Karamanlis.
