Papanikolaou Remembered 50 Years Later

papanikolaouTo commemorate the 50th year since famed doctor George Papannikoloaou passed away, the Embassy of Greece, UNESCO and the Hellenic Foundation for Culture, are holding events to honor him and his achievements, especially for investing a method for early detection of uterine cancer, a vaginal smear called the Pap test. It is still used worldwide for the detection and prevention of cervical cancer and other cytological diseases of the female reproductive system.
National Commission-UNESCO, the UNESCO Center for Women and Peace in the Balkan Countries, in cooperation with the Medical School and Department of Pedagogy of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, organized a Dec. 19 ceremony to mark his work. Scheduled to attend were Minister of Health, Andreas Likourentzos, and Minister for Macedonia-Thrace, Theodoros Karaoglou.
