A student at the University of Patras in Greece who was living in his dorm room for 22 years has been evicted, officials said.
The phenomenon of “eternal students” is common in Greece as besides free tuition, students get free free housing, free food seven days a week and, until now, never had to leave college even if they didn’t attend classes.
During this academic year, there has been a 25 percent increase in demand for dorm space as students are eager to avoid paying for their own apartments.
Many students are obliged to pay rent to their colleagues in order to share room in the student residences. Last year, 1,050 “eternal” students finaly left their room and after an inspection, it was found that many of the oldest students were renting out the rooms they had for free to other students to make money.
