Greeks Gamble Hopes Against Crisis

gamblingWith a crushing economic crisis affecting many Greeks, more of them are turning to gambling and games of chance, especially during the holiday season, in a desperate bid to get their hands on some big cash fast.
That has led the Therapy Center for Dependent Individuals (KETHEA) to warn that the situation can easily become pathological and turn into a gambling addiction.
Betting on sports, buying lotto tickets, playing poker, slot machines, or roulette are only a few of the activities in which compulsive gamblers engage. Specialists say that gambling too much, especially when it is at an early stage, is not easily recognized.
There are, however, some basic initial indications showing that someone is in fact a gambling addict. According to KETHEA the initial symptom of a compulsive gambler is that they usually try to hide their problem from their spouses, families, colleagues and friends.
Other indications are absence from home or work for many hours, lack of money from bank accounts and credit cards, unwillingness to work, along with low productivity, strange behavior (lies, indifference, irritability.) The average profile of a gambling addict is a man of 43 years old, married, stable accommodation and employed.
He is betting mostly on sports games results and devotes 5-10 hours a day to study before playing. Every week he spends from 200-800 euros, ($265-$1,057) despite facing financial problems. He probably started gambling between the age of 23-35 year old. And they usually lose, sometimes everything.
