Year of Remembrance of Makarios III

MakariosThe Cabinet of the Government of Cyprus has decided to declare 2013,Year of Remembrance of Archbishop Makarios III.  A government spokesman said the decision was made to preserve the the memory of the former Cypriot leader, who will be be honored with celebrations, events and other activities.
The Cabinet appointed the Minister of Education and Culture as coordinator for the implementation of both activities and events that are to take place. The goal of the Year of Remembrance of Archbishop Makarios III, according to the Council of Ministers is “the promotion of Makarios’ life and work in both a national and international level, the dissemination of his political beliefs over the protection of universal values ​​and universal ideals of freedom, democracy, human rights as well as the peaceful coexistence of people, irrespective of nationality, color, race or religion, and the establishment of Makarios in the mind of both the Cypriots and the international community, as one of the most prominent national and global historical figures which honors Cyprus, Hellenism in general, and global political history.”
