Greek Farmers Clash With Police

tractorsProtesting Greek farmers tried to blockade the national road in Larissa, north of Athens on Jan. 31 but clashed with police. Farmers then turned onto fields and under bridges trying to reposition their vehicles on the road.
The TV station Mega managed to reach the creek of PATHE, a critical access intersection. Tension flared and farmers returned to their blockade on the old national road nearby. They said it was their right to convene at PATHE.
The farmers got support for a different group from another group of syndicalists who support the New Democracy Conservative government the protest was directed against. They said they wanted to block a junction at Nikaia, where they wanted to meet with another group of farmers who had similar demands.
Farmers groups leaders said they had ruled out a bigger blockade in the area, but tractors were gathering all across the country in case there was a decision for mobilization to take protests onto the roads and block traffic. The farmers are upset with tax policies and want more government money for ruined crops, among other demands.
