Double Robbery near Kozani Raises Terrorism Fear

agrotiki_531_355At 10:00 a.m, Feb.1, a group of 10 hooded men barged into and robbed two bank branches in the small city of Velvedo near Kozani. According to local news reports, the robbers stole 200,000 euros from ATE Bank and another 5,000 euros from TT Bank, with both robberies carried out within minutes.
Newsit.gr reported that the robbers used two cars to escape. The first group attacked the TT Bank branch, while the second group smashed the front window of ATE Bank branch located some 100 meters away from the first robbery scene. Τhe robbers who barged into ATE Bank with a sledgehammer told the 10 people inside to stay still because they had no intention of hurting them and were only after the money. In the meantime, another member of the gang was strolling right outside the bank carrying a Kalashnikov rifle.
The robbers got into their cars and tried to flee in the direction of Metochi. According to kozan.gr, they stopped a well-known dentist from Kozani with their guns near the village of Kastania, and took his jeep by force in their effort to escape.
The local police forces were mobilized immediately and soon located and arrested three of the suspects near the town of Veria. According to information, police found in the suspects’ car heavy armory that raised the concern of the Anti-terrorism squad, now leading the investigation.
A fourth suspect was also arrested near Ptolemaida, while he was trying to set a stolen ambulance on fire that was supposed to be used by the gang as their getaway vehicle. The ambulance had been parked near the PPC mine in the village of Polimilos close to the Egnatia road.
The police is still investigating to track down the rest of the armed gang.
