Greek Farmers, Media Stick to Protests

Greek farmersAs striking Greek seamen were ordered back to work under the threat of being arrested, protesting farmers said on Feb. 6 they would not relent until the government backs down on plans for new taxes and other reforms.
Farmers, in their ninth day of demonstrations, criticized the civil mobilization order the government issued against the seamen. The farmers want lower oil prices and reductions in Value Added Taxes for their products as well.
They also began to stage roadblocks with their tractors on highways across the country while awaiting answers from leaders of the three parties in the country’s uneasy coalition government.
On the media front, journalists with state broadcasters went into a third day of striking to protest the government’s policies regulating the sector. The strike concerns journalists with public radio and television networks, press offices of state-owned companies and local governments and is scheduled to end on Feb. 7.
