Greek Farmers Reject Samaras Concessions

TractorsProtesting Greek farmers, who are demanding tax breaks and other benefits, have refused an offer from the Greek government after a long meeting on Feb. 10 in Nikaia, where representatives from 35 regions participated.
They said they would not relent and kept to their tractors positioned at key points on major roads across Greece, which they have continually threatened to blockade unless they get everything they want.
Proto Thema reported that they said they want to meet directly with Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, who had offered them big concessions, and said they will move ahead to block major roads from 2-3 p.m. until the government gives in. They said they also want a national co-ordinating center. They are urging other farmers to join the protest, along with other sectors.
After the meeting ended, at the height of the Nikaia junction near Larissa, north of Athens, hundreds of them got onto a major road despite a strong police presence, where they blocked traffic in both directions.
Samaras has twice in recent weeks sent in riot police to break up strikes of Metro workers and seamen, ordering them back to work or face being jailed or fired, but has been treading softly with the farmers, trying to quell rising social unrest over more austerity measures demanded by international lenders in return for votes.
