Can't Afford Heat, Greeks Turn Off Thermostats

imagesA University of Athens research team has discovered that 80 percent of Greek households with incomes under 14,000 euros ($18,730), unable to afford heating oil after the government imposed huge tax hikes, have no heat during the winter and are living in average temperatures of under 59 degrees, and 33 percent under 53 degrees.
The researchers monitor all winter long, every 15 minutes, 49 homes in Attica region with special orthographic sensors. So far, the majority of households observed, do not use any kind of energy for heating.
Only a few of them, at some time occasionally when the temperature drops too low, turn on the heat for brief periods or because they live in old buildings without insulation and energy windows.
The aim of the research team, was to actually identify the existing temperature levels in households of low and middle income citizens, because of overpriced energy sources.
“Our results are surprising and in fact we are scared, because it was shown that our co-citizens live in conditions beyond all limits of comfort, during almost all winter conditions, which actually put their lives at risk. It is also shown that a very large proportion of people who are either unemployed or have no money for heating, are living in buildings with temperatures below 10 ° C, at the same moment that middle class people and those who have a relatively large home with poor infrastructure, are now living at temperatures from 13 to 16 degrees (Celsius), “said Professor Matheos Santamouris, the scientific director of the research team.
