Domestic Vacations For Greeks This Year

kos-greeceDevastated by big pay cuts, tax hikes and slashed pensions, 90 percent of Greeks will spend their holidays this year right in their own country, unable to afford to travel, according to a survey by Eurobarometer.
This is far ahead of the 58 percent average in other European Union countries and a sign of just how deep Greece’s recession is, with a record 27 percent unemployment. Even worse, many Greeks will cut back severely on how much they spend for their domestic vacations.
A total of 87 percent of Greeks said they spent their holidays in Greece in 2012. Italians and Bulgarians were close behind with 80 percent and 79 percent respectively planning their holidays in their homeland. Croatians and Spaniards came next, with 74 percent and 73 percent holidaying within the borders of their respective countries.
According to the survey, 37 percent of Greeks did not go on vacation at all last year, compared to an EU average of 27 percent. Financial constraints were the reason given by 72 percent of Greeks who did not go on holiday in 2012, compared to an average rate of 46 percent in the EU.
