From Hospital, Theodorakis Says EU Covets Cyprus

mikis theo picNoted composer Mikis Theodorakis, who is being hospitalized with respiratory problems, said from his bed that he believes Cyprus’ economic crisis is being manipulated by European forces who want to gain control of possibly huge oil and gas reserves off the island.
“The brave resistance of Cyprus to the fierce attack of Germany and its allies, exposes seriously the Greek coalition government,” he said, pointing a finger at German Chancellor Angela Merkel, whose country would foot much of the bill for a Cypriot bailout that is being tied to confiscation of part of bank account holders’ savings accounts and deposits.
“It’s obvious that the European attack aims mainly to the reserves of Cyprus. The same objective, against our country and our people, has their destructive policy that is applied to Greece. This policy has already run the 50% of its course and we should expect even harder hits in the future,” he said.
“He added that, “I believe that we should turn this strategic disadvantage (the existence of reserves) into a strategic advantage. This requires a common front with Cyprus in all issues and economic cooperation with countries outside Europe concerning the joint exploitation of the reserves.”
