Greece Fourth in EU Road Deaths

car_crash300According to a European Commission report published on March 19, Greece remains fourth regarding deaths caused by road accidents. Lithuania, Romania and Poland are respectively the countries in the first three places. However, on a European level, road fatalities are 9% less frequent than in 2012.
Siim Kallas, EU Commissioner for Transport, stated “2012 was a landmark year for European safety, with the lowest ever number of road deaths recorded”.
“A 9% decrease means that 3,000 lives were saved last years,” Kallas continued. “It is hugely encouraging to see these kinds of results. Still 75 people die on Europe’s roads every day, so there is no room for complacency. We have ambitious goals to cut EU road deaths in half by 2020 and we need to keep up this momentum to get there.”
The Commissioner for Transport also stressed the importance of reducing the number of serious injuries caused by road accidents in Europe: “Road deaths are only the tip of the iceberg. For every death on Europe’s roads there are 10 serious injuries such as damage to the brain or spinal cord. We need a strategy to bring down the number of serious road injuries everywhere in the EU.”
In Greece, the road death percentage has been exhibiting a decreasing trend in the last few years. More precisely, it dropped by 9% in 2011, to which a 10% decrease can be added in 2012. However, Greece with no less than 92 road deaths per million inhabitants remains fourth in Europe.
Sweden, the Netherlands and Denmark remained in the three last places, with around 30 deaths per million inhabitants.
