Muslims of Thrace Through Loulakaki's Lens

486049_10151395589809633_311649856_nThe Benaki Museum in Athens is opening its gates on March 19 to host a photo exhibit titled, Thrace. So close, so far away: The Muslim world of western Thrace, by Pepi Loulakaki.
What does the contemporary Greek know about the closed-off world of Muslim Thrace?
According to AMNA, Loulakaki, having gained access to the Muslim community (Pomaks, Turks, Roma and Sudanese) has succeeded in focusing her lens on the personal life of modern Muslim women, on children in minority schools and during their playtime
She manages to introduce us to our unknown fellow citizens’ daily lives. According to the organizers, when people and cultures come together, opportunity for dialogue and cultural exchange grows, horizons broaden and prejudice diminishes.
Loulakaki’s cooperation with fellow worker and traveler, journalist Elena Moschidi resulted in a book Moschidi wrote the texts to, bearing the same title as the exhibition.
