Parliament Vice President Nakos Dies

nakosVice President of the Greek Parliament, Athanasios Nakos passed away today, March 28. He had been hospitalized since early March after a bypass surgery. However, he suffered a postoperative respiratory infection which he could not overcome.
The medical report issued said: “Second Vice President of the Greek Parliament, also MP of Magnesia, Mr. Athanasios Nakos died today, Thursday, March 28, at the Intensive Care Unit of the Athens ‘Health’ Hospital, from respiratory failure.”
Nakos was born in January 1950 in Volos. He was married to Danae Tsotsi, a civil engineer with whom he had two children.
In 1993 he was first elected Member of the Greek Parliament with the New Democracy Party, gaining the confidence of his fellow citizens, who elected him first MP in Magnesia. Since then he had always been elected in all subsequent elections in 1996, 2000, 2004, 2007, 2009 first MP in Magnesia.
After the elections of 1993, he served as President of the Agriculture field’s parliamentary work and then the Industry field.
In the first Government scheme of New Democracy’s government, he served as Interior Minister, and held this position until September 2009.
During his tenure, he designed and implemented the most successful financing project the local government work, Thiseas, a local government development program, which gave municipalities of the country more than 13,000 projects.
The institution of part-time job, gas at schools, the national population register and the social structures of municipalities are innovative policies signed and approved by him.
In 2008, he was appointed by the Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, President of the Inter-ministerial Committee for the Solid Waste Management in Greece and succeeded in closing 2,500 illegal dumps across the country and their replacement by modern landfills.
In November of  2008, Nakos became president of the 3rd Global Forum for Migration and Development, which was held in Athens attended by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
In January 2011, after the decision of the President of New Democracy Antonis Samaras, Athanasios Nakos served as Head of the sector of Citizen Protection.
After the elections of May 6, 2012, he was elected second Vice President of the Greek Parliament. In the elections of June 17, 2012, he was re-elected to the same position.
