Filopappos: Sacred Hill of Muses And Homeless

filopapposOnce it was the sacred hill of the Muses, across the Sacred Rock of the Acropolis. Today, it is  simply the place for the homeless. Now, that’s quite a Sacred place…
However, a bourgeois society like the Greek one knows a lot about hypocrisy, but never learned  respect. People didn’t happen to hear about the tents of the homeless of the Filopappos Hill.
In the center of Athens, above the Dora Stratou Dance Theater where Alekos Alexandrakis made his directorial debut with the neorealist film Dream Neighborhood, gathers the courageous, but the most unfortunate part of our society.
It is spring 2013, and the back side of the Acropolis is filled with tents of homeless. No, they are not mad, neither revolutionists biding their time in the forest; they are people like me and you thrown on the rocks, literally by the turn of life. But they are not defeated, all these people, who seem like our acquaintances, and sank without noticing how their life sank.
The oldest counts six years on the mountain, the youngest two months. And now that the weather clears up, he waits for the passersby, for his summer roommates and altogether they will be more than a hundred souls.
Yiorgis, 63 yefilopappos homelessars old, had been working at construction sites. Now he has moved to another famous site, where he has found a quiet, lonely corner and set up his tent.
He has moved all his fortune and his paintings, clothed them with nylon and hung them on the rocks. An unpaid job, an eviction, along with solitude and a society with blinders, washed him up on the mountain. He had climbed up the Acropolis, but he hadn’t imagined that he would become a neighbor with the Caryatids.
filopappos homeless_Almost every night, rats wander  around their feet. The weather conditions and especially the storms seem to be sent by the Twelve Olympians. Stories that keep you awake, prisons, tragic wrongdoings or mistaken personal choices, never believed to lead to such an outcome.
While descending the hill, you will come across a pile of poppies that symbolize spring and hope, if it really exists.
I don’t know how the more we are impoverished, the wilder and more intolerant we become, even to personal nonsense.
