Vegetables Donated to Poor Families in Athens

khpeftikaMore than five tons of vegetables will be taken from the city of Ierapetra in southeast Crete to Athens to be donated to poor families, part of an initiative of the local branch of the Hellenic Red Cross,  the Samaritans, Rescuers and Lifeguards Administration, working with the non-governmental organization Smile of the Child.
The offer came when Smile of the Child’s mobile medical unit’s was in Ierapetra, with the local branch of the Hellenic Red Cross and they decided to work together.
The President of the Hellenic Red Cross’s branch in Ierapetra, Andreas Mamantopoulos, reported that through courtesy of three producers’ groups, the vegetables were collected and will be donated to the families from The Smile of the Child’s two central warehouses in Ilion and Maroussi, regions in Athens.
A paper will also be given aiming at the promotion of local vegetables and at transmitting the message that this is, “Ierapetra’s answer to the services deprivation in the city.” Many Greeks are going hungry or without proper nutrition in a crushing economic crisis that has seen many suffer pay cuts, tax hikes and slashed pensions.
