More Transport Strikes Hit Greece

ferry strikeWith Greece beginning high hopes for a better tourist season after disappointing results in 2012, more strikes have begun, this time closing ferries to the islands on April 16 with sea men protesting a bill they said could lead to the loss of jobs for many.
The government said it wants fewer workers on boats in the winter when there are far fewer passengers and condensed routing schedules.
The 24-hour strike began at 6 a.m. and workers representing the seamen, who earlier this year were forced back to work by the government after a prolonged strike, said they will join a general strike on May 1 being called by the country’s union representing private sector workers.
Meanwhile, services on the Attica suburban railway (Proastiakos) and intercity trains will continue to face disruption until April 18 as Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE) workers will be holding four-hour stoppages between 8 p.m. and midnight every day. The action will not affect the metro service to Athens International Airport, officials said.
