Rizai’s Trial Postponed

A4657088D064741D869A0D2CE933E466Alket Rizai, a 36-year-old notorious Albanian convicted of murder, appeared before the judges of the Five-Member Court of Appeal for Felonies of Athens, on April 17, to be tried over a helicopter escape from Korydallos prison in 2009.
The case was delivered but the hearing was transferred to April 29, due to working hours.
Rizai’s companion, Aspasia Mitropia sat in the dock, facing charges in the same case. She had previously  been convicted to ten-years imprisonment. Recently, with a court ruling by the Judicial Council of Thiva, she was released with restrictive conditions of the ban on leaving the country and the regularly mandatory appearance at the police station of her residence. In a statement she reported that she expects the court will acquit her of the charge concerning her participation in the escape.
Rizai was transferred to the Court of Appeal under heavy security. About a month ago, he tried to escape from Malandrino jail in Central Greece holding six prison guards as hostages, demanding his release.
In the court of first instance, Rizai was convicted to 25-year imprisonment for his first helicopter escape from Korydallos prison with Vasilis Paleokostas in 2006. In 2009, the night before a court appearance over their first escape attempt, Rizai and Paleokostas escaped again from Korydallos prison.
