The Trail Of Migrant Abuse At Manolada

241115-124656438_bd0017f18b_bThe wounding of 29 immigrant workers on a strawberry farm in Manolada in the Peloponnese of Greece has caused outrage from activists and human rights groups, but farm owners in the area have been cited for several years for alleged abuse of foreign workers.
In 2008, successive publications presented detailed data about reported mistreatment of immigrants slaving away on the lands for little or no money, including children. Some fines were issued but no serious prosecutions took place.
In 2009 at Manolada, two Bangladeshi workers were tied to motorcycles and dragged and later a relative of the alleged perpetrators reportedly invaded at an immigrant’s house and hit him at the head with a bat. The immigrant, seriously injured, was taken to the hospital. No one was arrested.
In 2011 at the strawberry fields of Manolada, three men said to be abusing immigrants, including a child, were arrested. Authorities have said the string of related cases were isolated and had nothing to do with one another.
