A Half Century of Katzourakis

KATSOURAKISThe exhibition, Kyriakos Katzourakis’ Works 1963-2013: Painting, Theater, Cinematography, will take place in the Benaki Museum on Pireos Street from April 25 to July 28. This retrospective tribute to Katzourakis covers 50 years of creative work, from 1963 to the present day, and aims at shedding light on all aspects of the artist’s creative oeuvre, as well as on his efforts to highlight the links between painting and other arts.
The tribute coincides with the publication of Katzourakis’ book Order in Chaos, that was recently released. The book condenses his theoretical views on painting, the theater and the cinema.
“How can you talk about the modern Greek identity in a country that is for sale?” wonders Katzourakis, a “modernist with memory” or, more precisely, “a creator of the world, who, although breaths the air of the European Enlightenment, he brings his homeland as his inside cloth,” Manos Stefanides stated in the introductory note of the book.
The exhibition includes mainly large-scale oils, drawings, models of stage-set designs, while a specially designed area will be used to show excerpts from his films. The following films will be shown: Sweet Memory, Small rebellions and Way to West (the latter focuses on immigration). A significant place will be taken up by Katzourakis’ monumental piece “Altarpiece – House of Guilt” (1991-1994), where painting, theater, films and music all coexist, and which acts as a witness to the artist’s links to the past and to history.
All the pieces are from private collections in Greece and abroad.
