Medical Report Shows Grevena Prisoners Beaten

prisonA doctor’s report shows that 28 inmates in the Grevena prison in northern Greece suffered signs of beating while in custody. They said they were attacked by officers from the Special Anti-Terrorist Unit (EKAM) while in their cells during a time when there was a spate of prison breaks.
The prisoners claim that they were beaten by the police officers whose faces were covered, although the inmates said they didn’t provoke it nor put up any resistance and there was no apparent reason for the alleged assault.
Another 32 inmates also claimed to having been beaten. According to the Initiative for Prisoners’ Rights, the special Anti-Terrorist unit took the inmates out of their cells, struck them with batons and shot them with tasers, forced them to walk on all fours, and left them naked in the prison gym.
The medical examination reported bruising on their legs, chests and thighs, as well as signs of electroshock weapon injuries in various parts of their bodies, according to Eleftherotypia. One had swelling in the genital area.
Police denied the charges and said their inspection of cells was conducted in the presence of a prosecutor. They had no explanation for the report or the alleged injuries.
