Nazi Debt To Greece Could Ease Crisis

Die WeltWith Greece deciding to press for some 160 billion euros ($208.45 billion) it says it’s owed in WWII reparations for damages and forced loans to the Nazis, a commentary in Germany’s influential newspaper Die Welt said Germany should consider waiving part of Greece’s huge debt burden.

The piece notes that Greek authorities have expressed their determination to press demands for war reparations and “bring the matter to a conclusion.” Under the headline Mr. Schaeuble, Talk About War Reparations!” the article notes that Greece’s demands were first made by leftist veteran Manolis Glezos, a war hero who tore down the Swastika from the Acropolis in 1941, but have since been embraced by a government “under pressure to prove that it is not Germany’s lackey.”

He was referring to German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble, a hardliner on Greek austerity measures and debt repayment. Germany is the biggest contributor to $325 billion in two bailouts for Greece, on the condition of big pay cuts, tax hikes and slashed pensions.

The commentary quotes Greek Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos who told Parliament last week that the question of war debts remained “open” and that the government will take “decisive steps” after receiving legal advice on how to proceed.

The article also referred to a “moral imbalance” that could put Germany under pressure to show “some symbolic goodwill sooner or later” such as a partial waiver of Greece’s debts, which might be necessary eventually “as Greece will never be able to repay them.”

    1. Manolis Glezos is no more a “war hero” then any other of the oppressive manipulative self-righteous communist scum that after fighting the Nazis… went on to murder and oppress countless people just like the Nazis did!

Today leftist extremists like him pretend they stood for “democracy” but during the Greek civil war he fought to detach Macedonia for IMRO and one-party communist dictatorships. (also see North Korea today as a reminder of brutal oppression of communism was really about).

That some of our allegedly “moderate” leftist see this disgraceful manipulative oppressor as a “hero” only shows just how extreme they themselves are.

    2. “human rights’ and “democracy” advocate Manolis Glezos was well respect… by brutal communist oppressors of the Soviet Union that murdered millions of their own citizens and elimated all parties except the communist one (framing their totalitarian tyranny as “democracy” for those fooled by Orwellian double speak)

He one both a Lenin award and even was on a Soviet Stamp. “human rights” and “democracy” activist Mr. Glezos cheered on mass murdering communist thugs for decades.

    3. LOL. Shame on Greece. After 350 billions of Euro’s in welfare (mostly paid by these Germans), you still cry “Germany owes us”. You have been living off loans for generations hence the laziness amongst many Greeks that any mediocre job available is ‘beneath’ them.

“a commentary in Germany’s influential newspaper Die Welt said Germany should consider waiving part of Greece’s huge debt burden.” – the commentaries author is most likely an ‘opoulos’, so clearly it lacks substance

    4. As opposed to what? A “ski” that claimed to be “ethnic Macedonian”? Shame on the former self-identifying ethnic Bulgarians of FYROM.

“There is no single language in Macedonia, Instead there are several different dialects which have a close affinity to the Bulgarian dialects and they all together make up one language — Bulgarian” – Krste Misirkov

    5. Shame on FYROM for stealing the Greek name and history of Macedonia. Shame on Germany for all its bribes that its has given to these Greek traitors to get there way.. And a F.U goes out to ‘OPA’…

    6. Lets not forget that Germany has created mass murders in Greece and even wiped out entire villages, killing innocent men, women and children, Its time for Germany to pay for crimes against humanity.

    7. Although I don’t agree that Greece is due any reparations since they took the Marshall plan from the power USA, and this waived any rights to Germany in my mind.
HOWEVER, I do think it’s a great strategy which just might make Germany a bit nervous because like any negative PR campaign, if it gets enough press and enough supporters, it may make Germany settle in court, like a big company that realizes it could lose in a court so it makes a settlement prior to trial.
So, normally I find Greece a total basket-case (unlike the extremely smart, educated and power Greek-Americans!!!).
But, Greece definitely scored a goal on this one. Push the reparations and maybe, just maybe, Greece may get some remedy.

    8. What Greece got from the Marshall Plan was little compared to the UK, that had minimal damage compared to Greece and the rest of Europe.

Greece got 1/10th of what the UK got, lets compare the ‘physical’ damage of both countries during the war, and see who got the better deal with the objectives of the Marshall Plan.

The Marshall Plan was ‘enforced’ upon Europe not to save it but use is a a bulwark against communism; and how much of that money that was received went straight to the Greek military? and how much to the Greek populace that suffered during WW2 and to whose real benefit. The Greeks or the USA???

And with acceptance of the Marshall Plan money it does not ‘waive’ any rights or end any liability of the Germans ( in 1953 the USA forced this issue to end German reparations , NOT Greece as is was and still is a weak political entity), thus all talk during the ‘Cold War’ period of reparations from Germany ended unjustly for the Greeks.

By the way lets compare the ‘the extremely smart, educated and power Greek-Americans’ to say the Jewish American community in the USA.

Their political, lobbing power and influence is in the USA is far far superior to the the Greeks.

How much influence have the Greek American’s have had in the USA (Govt/Politics) over lets say … the name of the FYROM issue – None!

How is the rebuilding of the St. Nicholas church in NYC ( after Sept 11th) going??? Nothing has come from it.

Imagine if it was a synagogue, it would have been built by now and in the same spot!!!

Where is ‘the extremely smart, educated and power Greek-Americans’ power???

Your Greek American ingnornace and arrogance is amazing.

    9. What about all those innocent Macedonians that got ethnically cleansed by the Greeks to create the so called Greek Macedonia.

Now Hanky boy, go reincarnate your sacred band of Thebes poofy act with Alex. Oki dokey?

    10. You mean FYROM 20 year of fabricated history.

“We are Slavs. There’s no connection between us an alexander the Great. ” – Kiro Gligorov first elected President of FYROM

‘We are not related to the northern Greeks who produced leaders like Philip and Alexander the Great. We are a Slav people and our language is closely related to Bulgarian.’ – FYROM´s Ambassador to Canada Gyordan Veselinov, Ottawa Citizen Newspaper, February 24 1999

    11. OPA is not ‘Greek American”. He’s a Skopian ultra nationalist extremist that’s racist against Greeks. (why he obsessively trolls Greek reporter rather than stick to FYROM websites.)

    12. Sorry. I just realized you were replying to “Greek American” not OPA. My apologies. (Your handle name threw me off)

I wholeheartedly agree that Skopian OPA should go f-ck himself. He is a sick fanatic that is clearly racist against Greeks (given he obsessively trolls Greeks websites saying nasty things about Greeks) . OPA would stick to Buglarian forums to learn about his ethnic Bulgarian heritage rather than harass Greeks.

    13. Your memory seems to be having problems Skopian. If anyone is doing the ethnic cleansing its you former self-identifying ethnic Bulgarians. Aside from you Nazis obsessively trying to ethnically delete Greeks (which you are still trying to do), your hate has now even lead to delete your own ethnic BULGARIAN heritage.

When you visit your cousins in Bulgaria do you pretend you don’t understand Bulgarian?

    14. Greece should ask for this. Having little darker-skinned versions of Himmlers and Hitlers in the Greek Parliament does make the claim weaker though…

    15. “We are Slavs who came to this area in the sixth century AD… we are not descendants of the ancient Macedonians.” — [FYROM’S President Mr. Kiro Gligorov, Foreign Information Service Daily Report, Eastern Europe, February 26, 1992, p. 35.]

    16. Hitler was legally brought to power by the German people, so all the crimes he commited were done in the name of the German people… my 2 cents
