Cyprus Labor Day in the Era of the Memorandum

imagesCyprus celebrated Labor Day in the new era of the Memorandum, under conditions that will change citizens’ daily lives and will turn established rights and claims into a distant memory. Society, with melancholy watches a future that is lost and a present with no return.
Under the shadow of the Memorandum, unemployment and financial problems, trade unions met in the streets to honor the Labor Day anniversary.
Today, it’s been nine years since the Cypriot accession to the European Union, despite the insistence of many partners that the solution of the Cyprus issue was a more important priority. In January 2008 Cyprus joined the Eurozone and adopted the euro as its official currency, replacing the Cypriot pound.
The Cyprus Workers’ Confederation and the Pancyprian Federation of Labor organized gatherings in all cities at 10 a.m. The manifestations of the Pancyprian Federation of Labor were completed with a concert in Freedom Square.
Minister of Labor, Zeta Emilianidou, assured employees and the unemployed that the government will work vigorously, methodically and efficiently by their side, with absolute respect to social dialogue and employment relationships, so that better days come for Cyprus.
In her Labor Day message, Emilianidou noted that the government’s efforts focus on the management of this unprecedented situation of Cyprus.
On the occasion of Labor Day, the political parties with their declarations stressed out the importance of the day, especially in the current difficult conditions of the economic crisis.
