HCDCP Announcement on Influenza Α(Η7Ν9)

ergastirio_542_355The novel influenza  Α(Η7Ν9) has put the Hellenic Center for Disease Control & Prevention (HCDCP) on standby. HCDCP is observing the Α(Η7Ν9) course and advises the Greeks who recently visited China to consult their doctor immediately, if they experience any symptoms of respiratory disease during the first ten days after their return to Greece.
The influenza Α(Η7Ν9) virus was found to belong to the category of avian influenza which normally infect birds. “Normally these viruses do not infect humans because they do not have affinity with the human respiratory system. However, after the virus was adjusted to the human respiratory system and the close contact with poultry, these viruses can cause epidemics to humans,” HCDCP stated.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is in constant contact with the local health authorities in China and is closely observing the situation,   collecting information in order to conduct a risk assessment and develop a candidate vaccine. WHO does not recommend border control, nor travel or trade restrictions.
According to the WHO risk assessment, while Α(Η7Ν9) viral strain has a high mortality rate, fortunately, until today there is no evidence of increased and continuous human-to-human contagion. The avian influenza does not usually infect humans, so most people do not have any  corresponding antibodies. As a result, they are poorly or not at all protected from a potential worldwide spread of Α(Η7Ν9)”said HCDCP in its announcement.
So far, prevention measures against the respiratory diseases in Greece concern mainly the hygiene of hands. HCDCP in cooperation with the National Center of Health Enterprises (EKEPI), the Ministry of Health as well as with international organizations is closely observing the course of the novel influenza.
