Greeks First in Plastic Surgery

botox_h_596_355Spiegel, in an article published on May 9, draws attention to the paradoxical record that Greeks hold in plastic surgery despite the economic crisis. So except for a record in unemployment, in public debt and business bankruptcies, Greece now holds a record in cosmetic surgery as well.
The German magazine goes as far as to wonder where Greeks find the money needed to proceed to aesthetic surgery. “A good appearance is still important for Greeks. But why now?” asks the author of the article explaining that a large percentage of Greeks, around 35 percent, are uninsured.
According to recent data released in 2011 by the International Association of Plastic Surgeons, 142,394 plastic surgeries were carried out in Greece, which means that an average of one in seventy nine Greeks has been subjected to surgeries like liposuction, eyelid surgery and botox. So Greece, regarding its population, ranks second worldwide in plastic surgery, after South Koreans.
