Teachers Will Not Strike During Exams

000_par7556680-thumb-mediumAfter a 12-hour meeting of the presidents of the local Secondary School Teachers Unions (ELME), the Greek Federation of Secondary State School Teachers (OLME) decided the last moment to step back and not go on a strike the first day of the Panhellenic Exams. The initial proposal (note that OLME had decided a 24-hour strike on May 17 and had proposed 24-hour strikes from May 20 to 24) had collected 92 percent of the votes.
However, OLME, a powerful, 88,000-member union, failed to vote in favor of striking during the exam period and buckled under pressure from the government, even though an overwhelming majority had voted for the strike. During the meeting, the president of OLME Nikolaos Papachristos, changed the voting topic causing intense reactions among ELME presidents. Instead of asking them to vote for a strike, he confused them and asked whether members felt the ‘social basis’ could withstand a strike, suggesting that the union may not feel it has support from society.
Many ELME presidents then said that they were authorized by their local assemblies to vote only on the topic of strike during the exams. Eighteen presidents voted that conditions existed for a strike, 9 voted against and 57 voted blank. Therefore, the necessary majority was not collected and there will be no strike.
