A 48-year-old Cretan school gym teacher, Nikos Siragakis, convicted of repeated sexual abuse of 53 minors in the port of Rethymno was sentenced to 220 years in prison by a Pireaus court on May 17, stripped of his right to vote and to stand in elections for five years.
The court found he abused his position of influence and power for his own sexual satisfaction. It said the sentence cannot be appealed. He had faced a 401-year-sentence.
The teacher was transferred back to Trikala Prison in central Greece where he had been previously detained though it remained whether he would serve his sentence there.
The court refused to accept his request for recognition of extenuating circumstances.
